A Thousand Moons | a poem

I have long appreciated good poetry and have enjoyed trying my hand at writing a poem here and there since high school. Most of that early work is really bad, as I've talked about before, but I like to think that I have gotten much better at the craft. Be that as it may, the pieces that I have written in recent years are so few and far between that I don't feel qualified to call myself a poet. How about a writer who dabbles in poetry? :)

Anyway, a couple years ago as my 40th birthday was approaching (I'll pause for the over-the-hill jokes), I got a little inspiration to put some of my thoughts into verse. This is not a happy, give-you-the-warm-fuzzies sort of poem. But it reflects how I was feeling at the time. Life is not always roses; it's often quite thorny. In fact, the stem of a rosebush has only one bloom, but multiple thorns.

So, without further explanation, here is the most recent poem I have written:

A Thousand Moons

Once I had a thousand moons,
  But now half of them are gone!
I traverse the glass's dunes,
  Thirsting for another dawn.

The Great Bear roves the black sky;
  A downy fox prowls the blues.
These forms in the heav'ns are mine;
  All I've gotten for my moons.
